
The University of Maryland School of Public Policy co-sponsored “The Demographic Transition: Policy Implications of Fertility and Aging Trends” conference in Vilnius, Lithuania from May 23-24. The event brought together experts from around the world to examine the far-reaching effects of demographic shifts on public policy.
The conference was held at Vilnius University and was organized in collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley, the International Network for Social Policy Teaching and Research, and Vilnius University’s Faculty of Philosophy, Department of Social Policy. UMD School of Public Policy Professor Doug Besharov served as co-chair of the event.
The two-day conference featured six panel sessions and a total of 22 papers presented by scholars and practitioners from 15 different countries. Topics included a range of timely issues including population aging and declining fertility rates. The sessions offered comparative perspectives and practical insights, fostering a deeper understanding of how nations are adapting to demographic change.
In addition to exploring research and policy responses, the conference also supported international collaboration in social policy teaching and research.
