Isher Ahluwalia, Ph.D., a prominent economist and School of Public Policy adjunct professor from 2003-2004, died Sept. 26 in her home country of India. Ahluwalia possessed a colorful career rooted in economic research, with a particular passion for Indian industrial and urban growth. She served as director (1998-2002) and chairperson (2005-2020) for the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations, which she helped to develop into the prestigious, internationally-accredited think-tank that it is today.
Despite her short time at the University of Maryland, Ahluwalia left a lasting imprint on the School. Ahluwalia was one of the first International Development faculty members within the program, which still aligns with many of Ahluwalia’s areas of research interest, including economic stagnation and sustainable development.
