Evan Klein joined the University of Maryland's School of Public Policy and Philip Merrill College of Journalism as an embedded counselor in 2024. Klein has experience working as a Licensed Counselor within various outpatient mental health programs in Denver, Colorado, with a focus on teen and young adult populations. He has a passion for helping students discover their authentic selves and improve their overall health and well-being. Originally from Maryland, Klein studied psychology at Towson University. He also earned a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Towson University.

The embedded counselor for the School of Public Policy is a Counseling Center clinician situated in the School. By placing counselors onsite, the Counseling Center makes it easier for policy students to get mental health services and offers more direct access for policy faculty and staff to consult with a mental health professional about how to best support students.
The embedded counselor is a licensed mental health professional employed by the Counseling Center. As such, all mental health services provided by the embedded counselor are confidential and follow Counseling Center policies (visit the Counseling Center FAQ’s page for more information).
The embedded counselor works specifically with the School of Public Policy, tailoring services and programs to the unique needs of policy students. Information about additional Counseling Center services, resources and programs is available at counseling.umd.edu. Urgent services are available to students in person at the Shoemaker Building during business hours or by phone at 301-314-7651 outside of business hours.
Student Appointments
To schedule an appointment with the embedded counselor for mental health services, call the Counseling Center front desk at 301-314-7651 and ask to schedule an appointment with the embedded counselor for the School of Public Policy or email evank@umd.edu. His office hours in the School of Public Policy include Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as the second and fourth Friday of each month. The embedded counselor will assess your needs to determine how best to support you.
Request an Outreach Program for the School of Public Policy
The embedded counselor provides outreach programs tailored to the School of Public Policy for student groups, classes, program departments and other groups of faculty or staff by request. Programming is focused on mental health education and awareness, with programs for students focused on their mental health while programs for faculty and staff focused on techniques for best supporting students. To request an outreach program, contact the embedded counselor or submit a Counseling Center outreach request.
