Barrie Bain’s claim that universities “are charging their customers even though they are not providing any service” (Letters, September 30) was inaccurate. Universities incur large fixed costs paying their staff who cannot be dismissed because of a few months of interruptions caused by Covid-19. Moreover, preparing lectures online has doubled faculty members’ time, while some universities have cut salaries owing to budget deficits.
