Patrick O'Shea and Katrina Walsemann pose with Walsemann's Research Excellence award

Katrina Walsemann, professor and Roger C. Lipitz Distinguished Chair in Health Policy at the School of Public Policy, has been recognized at the 2026 Maryland Research Excellence Celebration. The award highlights faculty whose work advances research and raises the University’s national profile. One faculty member from each school or college is chosen for this distinction, with honorees nominated by their deans for work that elevates the University’s research enterprise.

Her recent work includes securing multiple awards from the National Institutes of Health, including a P30 Aging Center grant that established the Southern Population Aging Research Center. The Center advances research on critical disparities in aging, focusing on geographic differences; social, economic and environmental determinants; health disparities; and life course pathways shaping aging outcomes with unique emphasis on the specific challenges facing aging populations in the southern U.S.

The recognition places Walsemann among a select group of faculty honored at this year’s celebration for their research achievements.
