Learning to Teach

Back to All Publications

I’m busy and did two great posts already this week. I thought I might skip Throwback Thursday, but then I did a pass through my old blogs and found this on teaching from almost five years ago.

Right now, I’m busy preparing to teach a new class and I really can’t wait to get into the classroom!

In the post below, I talk about my disappointment with my career and my excitement about teaching. These feelings have only grown since. With my career at a dead-end I retired in August 2025. There is a sense of failure about this that I need to write about. But I’m able to focus on writing, teaching, travel, and art—all the things I really love.

Finally, while I’m no good at getting myself jobs, I’ve been helping students and others and that too has been deeply satisfying.

Learning to Teach

I never really thought I wanted to teach. I wanted to do brilliant research, write important things and be famous. As I drift (tumble) into middle-age, I have done some research and written some things. It is safe to say that I have not set the world on fire and am unlikely to do so. I’ve had a few modest brushes with fame, it is fun, but it also isn’t going to happen. (Unless a video of me hurting myself in an embarrassing way goes viral.)
