(June 2026). “Accelerating the Transition Away from Fossil Fuels in Response to the Global Energy Crisis with the Strait of Hormuz Closure.” Center for Global Sustainability, University of Maryland. 45 pp.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz in March 2026 has caused widespread energy crises and economic disruptions across countries, which highlights again the urgency of transitioning away from fossil fuels rapidly and globally. This report reviews national policy responses, alongside the latest energy and trade data, to understand how different countries across four groups based on trade status and reliance on Hormuz are responding to the crisis. Observed trends show the transition to clean energy is increasingly being pursued as a fundamental strategy for energy security and affordability, while many countries still approach fossil fuels as part of the near-term solution.
